Large Chrysanthemum Plate cut61
Large Chrysanthemum Plate cut61
by Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko
This striking large plate showcases the stepped, sword-tip chrysanthemum motif — a design inspired by an original work housed in the Suntory Museum of Art.
At the center of each petal, subtle stepped cuts create delicate variations in depth. When touched from the reverse side, a slight difference in height can be felt — a refined detail that reflects the sophistication of traditional Kiriko craftsmanship.
The historical original displayed a wavering boundary between the clear crystal and the colored overlay, enhancing the beauty of the bokashi (gradient shading) with a flame-like softness.
In contrast, modern overlay techniques allow for greater precision, resulting in a more structured and rhythmic stepped chrysanthemum pattern.
Carved at a gentle angle, the transitions of color reveal a soft, luminous gradient — an exquisite balance of geometry and light.
Both functional and sculptural, this piece serves equally well as a presentation plate or as a decorative centerpiece.
