12. What are “Traditional Japanese Crafts”?
“Traditional Japanese Crafts” refer to crafts officially designated by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
To receive this designation, a craft must meet strict criteria, including:
• primarily handmade production
• use of traditional techniques and methods
• use of traditional materials
• a history of continued production for many generations
• production rooted in a specific region of Japan
These crafts represent both cultural heritage and living craftsmanship passed down through generations.
In addition to officially designated crafts, Japan is home to many workshops and makers who continue regional craft traditions with exceptional skill and innovation.
