Fan-Shaped Maki-e Lacquer Art Panel | Rinpa Masterpieces
Fan-Shaped Maki-e Lacquer Art Panel
by Yamada Heiando
A refined decorative lacquer artwork inspired by the Rinpa school, one of the most celebrated traditions in Japanese art.
The composition brings together five iconic masterpieces of Japanese painting — works designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties — including masterpieces associated with artists such as Tawaraya Sōtatsu, Ogata Kōrin, Hon’ami Kōetsu, and Suzuki Kiitsu.
Crafted in the form of a suehiro (expanding fan), a traditional symbol of prosperity, growth, and auspicious fortune, the piece expresses the enduring beauty of classical Japanese decorative art.
The artwork is created using the traditional maki-e lacquer technique, where fine metallic powders are carefully applied onto layers of lacquer over a gold leaf background. Each motif is meticulously built through repeated layering, polishing, and drying processes.
Due to the complexity of the technique, production requires several months of work by master artisans, resulting in a piece of exceptional brilliance, depth, and craftsmanship.
Produced by Yamada Heiando, a historic lacquerware house established in 1919 and recognized as a supplier to the Imperial Household of Japan.
Cultural Background
The design draws inspiration from the Rinpa school, a distinctive artistic movement that emerged in the Edo period.
Unlike many artistic schools that relied on strict master–disciple lineages, Rinpa evolved through artists who admired and reinterpreted earlier works, allowing the style to be passed down across generations in a unique and creative way.
Rinpa art is known for its bold compositions, stylized depictions of nature, and dramatic gold backgrounds.
In this artwork, five celebrated Rinpa masterpieces are brought together within a single composition, condensing more than four centuries of artistic heritage into a unified decorative design.
Craftsmanship
This artwork is created using traditional maki-e lacquer techniques, one of the most refined decorative methods in Japanese lacquerware.
The process includes:
• Gold leaf base application
• Multiple lacquer layering stages
• Hand-sprinkled metallic powders
• Detailed polishing and finishing
The radiant gold background reflects a defining feature of Rinpa painting, enhancing the vibrancy of the motifs and creating a dynamic decorative effect.
Each piece is individually handcrafted, making every work subtly unique.
