Chirori Sake Ewer
Chirori Sake Ewer
by Shimadzu Satsuma Kiriko
Alongside the iconic Funagata bowl, the Chirori stands as one of the most representative forms of Satsuma Kiriko.
Unlike conventional Satsuma Kiriko, where the entire exterior is layered with colored overlay glass, this piece follows the original historical method of partial overlay application, in which color is applied only to specific areas of the body. This technique faithfully reflects the museum-held original housed at the Suntory Museum of Art.
The term chirori traditionally refers to a vessel used for pouring sake — often associated with metal containers for warming. However, this piece is crafted from crystal glass and is not suitable for heating.
The formation of the spout, the handle mount, and the precise partial overlay require highly advanced glassblowing and shaping techniques. Master artisans — often referred to as “artists of flame” — manipulate molten glass with exceptional skill to achieve this refined form.
An extraordinary fusion of historical authenticity and contemporary precision.
